WHAT TREATMENT IS THIS?

Dermaplaning is a safe, effective, and non-surgical way to enhance skin tone and texture and diminish fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and other superficial irregularities. A method of physical exfoliation leaving the skin with a luminous glow. Removing the dead skin cells along with fine “peach fuzz” (Vellus hair) that traps dirt & oils, leaving complexion smoother with more even skin tone. This does NOT make your facial hair regrow thicker, darker and prickly.

BENEFITS?

  • Improves textured skin
  • Removes fine facial hair and peach fuzz
  • Enhance the effectiveness of other skin treatments
  • Reduces signs of aging

TREATMENT PLAN?

Since this treatment works by removing dead skin cells, surface imperfections, and unwanted hair, it's best to get it done every three or four weeks.

RECOVERY TIME?

Your skin will feel sensitive and vulnerable right after a dermaplaning facial. Dermaplaning requires no down-time, therefore you can resume to your daily schedule as normal.

HOW COMFORTABLE IS THIS TREATMENT?

During a dermaplaning procedure, you shouldn't feel any pain. You may feel a tingling sensation during the treatment.

ANY RISKS?

The downsides of dermaplaning: There are a range of common side effects, including breakouts, risk of infection, redness or discoloration, and irritation.

PRE TREATMENT

1. Discontinue any manual or chemical exfoliation 3-5 days prior to service.

At-home facial care accounts for 50% of the results you yield. If you are currently using any retinol, exfoliating serums, enzymes, facial polishes, or scrubs - discontinue use.  Over exfoliation can cause acne breakouts, hyper/hypo pigmentation, redness, and dry skin. Skin cells take time to renew and you must allow them to do so before receiving a maximum exfoliation service.

3. Avoid direct sun exposure for 5-7 days prior to service.

While we do recommend sun exposure (in moderation), it can damage cells and leave them more sensitive than normal.

4. Schedule your Botox or filler after your service.

Do not schedule your injectable services prior to receiving a dermaplaning treatment.  There is a 4-hour window after Botox injections in which you are not permitted to lie down. After filler, you must wait 3-4 days to receive any facial treatments to ensure placement of the product.

5. Schedule facial waxing 1-2 weeks prior to service.

Facial epilation such as waxing, sugar, and threading should be scheduled at least 7 days prior to service or 14 days post service.

If waxing services are scheduled to remove unwanted vellus facial hair, you may forego the appointment altogether, if you'd like. Dermaplaning does not target hair follicles and will not hinder growth, but spending money on both services every month may prove frivolous.

Epilation (removal of hair from follicle) received for "whiskers" around the chin is advised before service - within the appropriate time frame.

Dermaplaning blades can be difficult to glide over terminal hair and are not intended to do so.

It is important to note that waxing and sugaring both remove some dead skin cell particles and act as a mild exfoliant. Threading can cause irritation if scheduled too close to any exfoliation treatment.

6. Reschedule your appointment if you have open wounds or acne lesions.

This one's easy. We're using a sterile scalpel blade to remove hair and skin cells - we do not want to be shaving over open wounds.

If you are unsure if you should reschedule, send your service provider an email with some photos of your skin and let her assess.

Do not show up the day of your appointment with open acne or lesions. Your appointment will undoubtedly be rescheduled and you may be subject to a cancellation fee.

7. Wait 6 months after completion of Accutane to receive any exfoliation treatment.

Accutane increases the fragility and sensitivity of the skin. The risk for infection, trauma, or damage is greater while taking this medication and the duration it takes for it to remove fully from your system.  Advisement is to wait 6-12 months after completion before receiving any treatments that remove epidermal skin cells (waxing, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning).

POST TREATMENT AFTER CARE

Your skin will feel sensitive and vulnerable right after a dermaplaning facial. Dermaplaning requires no down-time, therefore you can resume to your daily schedule as normal. It may be considered a “lunch-time facial”, so you may go back to work if you need. There is possibility you can cause injury to the skin if aftercare instructions are not followed and taken seriously. As with any professional treatment, there are rules to stick to after.

1. Avoid direct sun exposure for the immediate 48-72 hours post dermaplaning.

The outer layer of skin, the epidermis, acts as a waterproof barrier and protects the below layers of skin from exposure to the outside world. The layer of dead skin cells which builds up is what we remove during dermaplaning. This protective layer of dead skin cells, is no longer after dermaplaning. Only healthy cells are now exposed, this means the body views this as a form of trauma and its reaction is to protect. Dermaplaning is a form of exfoliation, we remove dead skin cells. The body freaks out and more skin cells are made. Collagen and elastin fibres are produced, this prolongs ageing. We promote the production of constituents that give us plump, full skin as we have tricked the body in removing what it views as the first line of defense. We have removed the skin cells containing excess pigmentation and devoid the appearance of “glowing” skin.

2. Put your sunscreen on everyday!

A broad-spectrum physical sunscreen (one containing zinc in particular) is recommended, this means it protects us from both UVA and UVB rays. To remember the difference easy, UV-Aging vs UV-Burning. UVA rays cause cellular damage which ages the skin and UVB rays cause cellular damage which burns the skin. We do not recommend sunscreens that you can purchase from the supermarket. They may contain synthetic chemical ingredients and break down the moment they are exposed to heat.

3. Discontinue the use of any exfoliants for one week.

Cleansers, serums or moisturisers that contain retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, micro beads or enzymes will continue to further exfoliate the skin. Over exfoliating can cause the skin to hyperpigment (excess pigmentation), and become red, dry and flaky. Allow seven days post-dermaplaning before you use any exfoliating products.

4. Cleanse with a gentle cleanser.

Use a gentle cleanser to avoid any irritation to the skin. The skin may feel slightly tender after your first treatment. As previously mentioned, the epidermis layer of cells have been removed and must be treated with more care.

5. Do not touch or pick at the skin.
The cells of the skin are all connected together by something called desmosomes. When you pick at one piece of skin, it is linked to another. Picking at the skin can cause the removal of fresh skin cells before they are ready to shed. The risk of damage is increased - so please keep your hands and fingers off your face (also our hands are full of bacteria!)

6. Avoid introducing any new products to the skin for the initial 72 hours.
You do not know how your skin might be react to a new product. This is not the time to be testing out new skincare. Again we can over-work the skin and it could take a negative response which we don’t want. Please stick to the products you know your skin loves. Follow just a simple skincare routine for the first seven days to allow your skin to settle and rebuild those cells back healthily.

7. Keep the skin well hydrated!
Dermaplaning can be a drying treatment for some skin types. It is important within those first seven days to keep you skin hydrated.

8. Makeup!
For the initial 24 hours post dermaplaning, we would recommend to avoid wearing any makeup (unless it is completely necessary and has to be 100% mineral based). After this period, makeup application is super fun, particularly if you are extra fuzzy! Most people find they need less makeup after this treatment, and it doesn’t look cakey. Powder and coverage apply smoothly and it doesn’t get trapped in any hair. Amazing!
